Airplane is known as one of the safest transport system on earth, but still many people are scare of taking flight today. If your hands are sweating or your heart beating faster just before take off or landing, you are probably one of this people. Depend where you are traveling this feelings can become more intense, especially if you have heard about the numerous tragic accident that the concerned region has been involved in.

The purpose of this article is not to make you more afraid of taking the plane, but just to inform you about the reality. And may be help you take the right decision when purchasing your flight ticket. Even a 100% way to travel safety doesnt exist yet and will probably never do; we all want to put the balance in our favor. In some countries minimum precaution and full information seems to be required.

I love Indonesia. It is a wonderful country with more than ten thousand tropical islands, thousands of dialects and hundreds of interesting cultures. White sand and paradisiacal beaches, impenetrable rainforest and archipelago of active volcanoes make this territory one of the most wonderful countries in the world for backpackers. The wild life inside the sea as on the land are incredibly diversified and Indonesia count hundreds, if not thousands of species you wont find anywhere else. Additionally, Indonesia has rich natural resources which provide food and premium material for this over populated country (more than 200 millions people).

What relation with airplane? I believe many people are reluctant to travel around Indonesia since the recent event. Or should I say events (with an s?. Indeed, the last few years have been catastrophic in terms of Airplane Crash. Unfortunately, this wonderful country is governed by a vast majority of corrupted politician who have much better to do than controlling the airplane regulation. So of course, the big competitions among Airlines Company push each of them to reduce the charges at any cost. And very often starting by reduce the maintenance frequency of their planes or the used of old spare parts, etc.. This can be scary, but it is the true.

Obviously, the Indonesian Transports Ministrys recently announced that they will probably drop three airlines to the lowest rating category. Those Airlines were Adam Air, Wings Air and Dirgantara Air. Basically, they separate the companies in three different category. The first category (category I) is considered as the fully compliant?group. The companies in the last category (category III) will have three months to make improvement before having their licenses revoked. The middle category (category II) is for the companies which have met the minimal safety requirement but have not yet complied with a number of flight-related safety measures.

After checked the safety regulations of all the 20 passenger airlines, they come with the following results.

None of the airlines are completely complying with safety regulations. It means that none of the all Indonesia airlines companies are in the category I. The 13 companies in the category II are: Garuda Indonesia, Merpati Nusantara Airlines, Lion Air, Sriwijaya Air, Wings Air, Indonesia AirAsia, Mandala Airlines, Pelita Air Service, Riau Airlines, Trigana Air Service and Travel Express Aviation Service. These airlines fall short on a smaller number of safety requirements. And for the bottom category III, we have: Batavia, Adam Air, Kartika Airlines, Trans Wisata Air, Jatayu Airlines and cargo jetliners Tri MG Intra Asia Airlines and Manunggal Air Service.

Some of the company airlines in the middle category proclaim to have no idea of the kind of criteria the government is using to rate the airlines. I have to admit that transparency has never been the strong point of this government. Some airlines promised they will make improvements. At least, this result has boosted the debate and obviously should improve the situation in the future.

Personally, I believe AirAsia, Garuda Indonesia or Merpati to be some of the safest, despite the tragic events of Garuda Indonesia last month. For AirAsia, it is actually not a local company as they are based in Malaysia, but they provide at least fifteen destinations in Indonesia. And the have some of the cheapest airline tickets available in Asia.

I hope this article does not take away your curiosity for traveling in Indonesia. As an expatriate for seven years in Jakarta, I recommend you to consider this destination for your next trip. Indonesia is still one of the rare country in the world where you can find such diversity of culture and panorama in the same place. How Much Bandwidth Does Your Business Need?

It doesn't matter what size your business is ... small, medium, or large. Having to determine how much bandwidth is needed for a new computer network, or upgrade of an existing one, is enough to make anyone break out in a cold sweat.

You can relax. Here's a simple guide to walk you through the minefield... and get you to the other side.

This should be approached from two angles - the first is to figure out where you are, and the second is where you need to go.

(1) Where you are - You need to have a sense of what you have now and how is it being utilized. Get an inventory of your current data and voice circuits. The monthly bills will give you a sense of call volume. You can ask your telecom provider for a report that will tell you max concurrent lines in use. This will be helpful to determine call volumes. For example if you have three PRIs, you may find that at times you have all channels in use at the same time. This could indicate capacity issues.

If you don't have any network monitoring in place, a tool like PRTG (cheap) or MRTG (free) can give you a sense of bandwidth and traffic type. Are people streaming videos all day long? Is it important for them to do so?

2) Where you're going - Once you get a handle of where you are, you need to understand what the business goals are for the next year or two. If they expect to add people, this means more capacity. If they want to improve sharing or data or extend systems across multiple locations, this may mean private networks. Adding more people? This means bandwidth and call volume may go up - especially if it is sales or customer support since they are one the phone more often.

As far as circuit selection, that is driven off what is available by providers in your area and how much does it cost for a term (12,24, 36 mo). Typically, you can get T1s just about anywhere, but you are limited to 1.5Mbps increments. This means you need more cards in your routers. After bonding 4-6 T1' it may be better to look at another circuit type. Check to see if ethernet/fast ethernet or fiber is available. These give you the most flexibility in increasing bandwidth as time goes on.

Based on circuit costs, I would not really go more than 36 months - 24 may be better. Also, go competitive bid if you can for services. The Internet has changed our life entirely. This new technology has become a major element which influences all that we do at work and at home. Hence we can say that our entire activity depends on the Internet speed, because according to this we can spend more or less time to accomplish what we intended to do. Since we live in a speedy century, we all are looking for a very high Internet speed, but this is not always an easy deal.

The first step is to learn how to find out what your Internet speed is. The Internet speed is determined by 2 components: the download rate and the upload rate of data which are usually measured in Kilobits per second. The download speed is the most important because we usually transfer files from Internet to our computer, but there are cases when we need a high upload speed.

We may test our internet speed in the manual way, by calculating the time our computer needs to transfer a file of a known size, but this is the old method.

The new way to determine our internet speed is to access a service that allows us to run a test through their servers by sending our computer an information packet which our computer will send it back to them. In this way the site measures the time our computer needed to download and upload the information packet and informs us the internet speed of our bandwidth.

By this test we measure the actual speed of the Internet and in the same time the real internet speedof our access to the internet. The actual speed limit is the amount of useful data that your internet connection can transmit and receive in a second. On the other side, the real internet speed includes also non-significant information. But when we make the test, only the actual speed is measured, the real internet speed is not important in this calculation.

Now that we know what our internet speed is, let's see what we can do to improve it. The first solution is to install optimization software. If you have a Dial-Up connection and use Windows 98 or Me, click Start, Settings, and then Control Panel. Right click on the Modems icon and from Properties tab choose the General tab. Use the Maximum Speed Drop-Down menu to select 115200. If this setting causes your Modem to no longer connect, change it to 57600. Windows XP users should click Start, Control Panel and switch to classic view. Double-click the Phone and Modem options and choose the Modem tab. Change the maximum settings port speed to 115200 and if the Modem responds badly or not at all, change the speed to 57600.

Broadband users should think of using a tweak utility such as TCP Optimizer. After downloading the software we must run it and make a backup of our current settings. Save the backup, and follow the instructions in the software to optimize our broadband speed. Don't forget to click apply changes and click Yes if the software ask you to re-boot the computer.Now our computer should run faster. If the new settings do not satisfy you, return to the program and restore your back up settings. If you failed to make a backup, restore Windows default settings.

And the last solution would be to change your internet provider with a better and reliable one. We may choose from a large scale of opportunities. There is no reason to waste our time with a lazy internet speed when we can spend our precious time with a high-speed internet connection.

So what's is the relationship between bandwidth and latency? If your internet connection speed has the proper bandwidth, why does latency slow it down? Or does it? Just how exactly does latency affect your internet? These are just some of the common questions asked......what follows is some answers in both technical and layman's terms.

Latency is the time it takes your data (packets) to get from point A (your house/modem) to point B ( the destination). Latency happens because of each of the "stops" your data has to make on the way to point B. These stops, called hops, are the different routers and in some cases servers across the internet that handles and routes traffic accordingly. The more hops that get added into the route of your data, the higher your latency will become. The farther away point B is, typically higher latency is experienced, simply because there is more distance and hops encountered. Also, each of these hops can also become busy so to speak, therefore the busier they get the more time it will take them to respond to your traffic requests, hence higher latency.

Most file transfer over the Internet uses TCP/IP. The receiver constantly sends messages back to the sender (ACKS) letting it know all is will or if not which packets need to be resent. If the channel has high latency this reverse communication take too long causing transmitter to stop sending until ACKS are received.

TCP also has a slow start mechanism. The sender has no idea of end-to-end channel capability. A slow start is designed to prevent overwhelming intermediate slower links.

Esentially, your bandwidth is the speed between you and your ISP, anything outside that, your ISP has no control over.

Actually, latency may or may not be an issue. Because latency is the delay between getting information from point A to B, it's much more of an issue in interactive applications then large transfers.

With large transfers, if your bandwidth is sufficient, reliable, and properly configured, you won't notice much of a latency issue with high latency connections. Once the "pipe is primed", the data is flowing at full speed. As long as the ACK packets are returned at a regular interval frequent enough that retransmissions don't occur, the flow will be steady and the only delay is really just during the initial startup of the transfer.

However, with interactive applications, that initial delay is what really can kill you. While it's exaggerated, say you have a 1 second latency and sending a packet takes 1 second. If you are sending a file that's 10 packets long, your total connection time is 11 seconds. If you are sending a single packet and waiting for a response back of a single packet, and you do this twice, your total connection time will be 8 seconds but yet you only sent 40% as much traffic.

Web traffic is kind of in between the two. It's not typically a large transfer, but it's not highly interactive like a online game. Typical page traffic is short bursts of requests (high latency) followed by longer periods of inactivity while you look at the page. There are a few tricks that can be done to help reduce this as an issue. There are proxy servers and pre-fetch utilities that will "preload" the page for you. During that time where you are looking at the page and your connection is setting idle, the prefetcher can download pages that the current one is linked to. When you request one, hopefully the page has been cached and can be displayed much quicker. If not, you are no worse off then having to wait for it to be loaded. This can work good for more static pages but if you are looking for something for dynamic pages (e.g. Google Maps), a prefetcher doesn't work as well or at all. Also, checking to see if your browser is using the appropriate number of connections can improve things.

The bottom line is there is a relationship between bandwidth and latency. But it may or may not be an issue.

Securing a home wireless network is a two step process. The first step is to ensure network security by securing the wireless access point or router. All of this can normally be done through the web based software interface of the device, by typing in the default address of ?92.168.0.1?

The first thing that needs to be changed is administrator username and password. Many networks are hacked into, simply because nobody bothered changing the default values. This is the same as most VCRs still blinking 12:00 because no one changed the time. Once this is done, enable MAC address filtering, and add computers based on their MAC address. This option will allow only those specified computers to connect to the network, but will not however guarantee total security.

The network SSID defines a name for the network. The default value of this should be changed to an obscure and long string. This value should be written down in a safe place and entered into the machines that are allowed to connect. Disabling the broadcast of the network SSID also provides an extra layer of security as the network will not advertise itself to outsiders.

Encryption should also be enabled. The default encryption is normally weak and can be easily broken. Normally WEP (Wireless Equivalent Privacy) is used for data encryption, however where available try and use WPA-PSK encryption. This method uses 256 bit encryption for transmitting data and the key also changes so provides a far more secure alternative to WEP.

Some routers have firewalls built in. Where available make sure that this option is enabled.

The second step of securing a home wireless network is securing each individuals PC. This can be done by installing a software firewall (this may not always be necessary if a hardware firewall is installed), antivirus software, anti-spam and pop-up blocking software. It is essential to keep this software up to date, as downloading the latest security updates for the operating system and web browser you are using.

You can manage your home network yourself if you have the time, or you can buy a home networking software that will monitor your network and alert you to any intruders or weak security measures for about $30. Whichever way you choose to do it make sure you secure your home wireless network.

Another disappointing aspect was the cost of internet access on the ship. At 75 cents per minute, it turned most people off and while packages of 250 minutes for $100 were available, it still seemed excessively high.

The casino is a popular venue on a ship and the slot machines attract plenty of patronage. The one and two cent machines generally attract the most interest however, they were few in numbers and were outnumbered clearly by the 25 cent and higher machines. For someone looking to play them for a little fun and recreation, then it could become and expensive exercise.

Carnival Glory Hospitality

This cruise ship review isn't about highlighting the negatives. The hospitality was first class and the staff fantastic. That's what you would expect on a floating resort. It certainly made the experience worthwhile despite some of the points made above.

When assessing a cruise ship review make sure you get a cross section of reviews before making any decision to book a ship. While an overall price may seem appealing just be aware that there are costs associated with traveling on a cruise ship and if you're working on a tight budget, they can impact your hip pocket.

In the US, most of the people have one or more broadband access services to choose from - variations of DSL from multiple vendors and cable. That is if you're in a metropolitan area. For more rural locations your choices are limited.....if you have any at all. Therein lies an opportunity for those willing to pursue it.

In the rural areas of the country, the selection is limited. Satellite is available to anyone (at high cost), but between dial up and T1 there are no options for many residents. Satellite suffers from latency, making it unsuitable for VoIP and some other real time Internet services. Some applications that should not be sensitive to latency (email, Web forms) will perform poorly or fail due to the increased packet time.

The traditional carriers (RBOC) and resellers face a cost issue in bringing broadband service to outlying areas. Without a concentration of users the per user cost at published rates causes either a poor or negative margin. The way cost accounting is done in larger corporations makes the business case worse for a large carrier. Cost allocations between departments for such things as floor space, personnel, and backend support end up as added costs rather than leverage opportunities. Traditional wired service will not reach outlying residents unless mandated by law, and the trend is against this happening in the near future.

So the opportunity is open for a business offering Internet broadband access service to outlying residents.

Therein lies a tremendous opportunity.

In the heart of Silicon Valley a revolution is about to take place. It could change the Universe as we know it. Don't laugh, this revolution will grab you by the short wires and turn your world upside down.

It will affect your life and the lives of your children's children. It might just be the spark that changes everything...

It all has to do with the Internet.

Someone wants to give the Internet its wings. Get rid of all those wires and monthly bills. Set it free. Let it fly among the stars. Broadcast it out into the stratosphere. Or in other words, make it free for everyone.

And it's about time.

Are we talking about a free wireless Internet for the masses? Well, not exactly and not yet. But it's the start of such a concept that could quickly become a reality for many people very soon. It has to start somewhere and why not in Silicon Valley. Where else would you want to start a free wireless revolution but a place that really knows how to cash in its chips.

And who else would you expect to lead this Internet Parade than Google; the all knowing, all seeing, omnipotent and undisputed ruler of the mighty cursor.

Google wants to give free broadband Wi-Fi service to the small city of Mountain View, sometimes AKA-ed as the Capital of Silicon Valley. Located between the Santa Cruz Mountains and San Francisco Bay, Mountain View is home to around 72,000 young, vibrant and smart residents. The median age is 32.8 years old. Pure Google fodder.

Google has proposed a system of providing free Wi-Fi via 300 transmitters on light poles which would virtually make the city one big hotspot. City leaders now have to decide if Google should get the go ahead for this free Internet. In its proposal, Google has plainly stated its own self-interest in such a system.

"In our self-interest, we believe that giving more people the ability to access the Internet will drive more traffic to Google and hence more revenue to Google and its partner websites."

Obviously, Google has everything to gain. Ad revenue and the Internet is its lifeblood. Why not expand that lifeblood. And why not make the Internet pay for itself. Why shouldn't it be free and ad supported -- cut out all those monthly ISP bills users now have to pay.

Will the majority of Internet users be willing to give up their ISP bills for a few Google ads on webpages? In a heartbeat!

Sure, there will be naysayers, all revolutions have them. Commercialism of the web is a totally bad road to traverse. Capitalism is wrong. But it's a moot argument, the web is already monetized up to the yin-yang. Users should get something back for a change. It might be totally in Google's self-interest to give people a free Internet but there's no denying that such a gesture would also be a way of sharing all that ad revenue.

A free Internet that spans the Globe and beyond -- available to everyone. Such a system is probably a natural evolution. The Internet is already turning into a billion channel universe broadcasting its contents into the stratosphere. Why not give all this content some wings.

Why not make this broadcasting system free and ad supported. There's a subtle democratic gesture in what Google is offering. Will people accept this offer or try to hold back evolution. Will they enable Google "to be a good corporate citizen and play a pioneering role in a public-private partnership to bridge the digital divide."

Of course, this is just the start, if Google's Proposal flies, a free Internet will only be a click away.

Today, Mountain View. Tomorrow, the Universe.

Broadband - The Digital Divide

When broadband first appeared, it seemed that it would be available to everyone in the country. Sadly, as the years have gone by it's proved that this is not the case.

People living in the more rural areas of Britain are paying the same amount for their service, yet in many cases are getting much slower connection speeds due to the lack of exchanges in close proximity to their homes. This is assuming they can get a connection at all - there are still parts of the UK that aren't equipped for broadband at all.

But living far away from an exchange isn't the only thing to affect connection speed. Someone living just 1 mile from their local exchange could have the same low speed as someone living 3 or 4 miles from the same one. The quality of phone line and your existing hardware can also be a factor in slow broadband.

The technology watchdog Ofcom is aiming to get broadband providers to provide line checks and approximate connection speeds to potential users before signing them up. It's been proven that the maximum speed advertised is often much higher than the actual speed most customers get. Consequently, consumers are up in arms about having to pay full price for half service, particularly those in the areas of the country who cannot get a decent connection speed. They are paying the same price for their meagre 1.4Mbps as someone with a (rare) 6.9Mbps connection speed.

Unfortunately, the situation doesn't look like it will get resolved in the near future. It's been estimated that the more remote parts of the country could be waiting up to a decade for a broadband connection comparable to even the slower ones in an urban area, and the ones who do get a connection may never get the speed advertised to them by their provider. As a result, people are paying more than they can afford for more expensive packages, when they'd get the same speed from a cheap broadband tariff.

Providers take note: offer an individual tariff based on a personal connection speed rather than an unattainable maximum. You'll be swamped with sign-ups.

Users who want to connect to ADSL broadband use the ADSL modem to do so. ADSL modems are a very cost-effective solution for users and are popular across the world, including the US. The ADSL modem enables the transfer of Internet data directly to the computer. The data rates provided by ADSL modems are consistent with North American and European digital hierarchies. Users can purchase these modems from the market with various speed ranges and capabilities. The minimum configuration enables data rates of 1.5 or 2.0 Mbps downstream in a 16 kbps duplex channel. Other configurations offer rates of 6.1 Mbps along with a 64 kbps duplex. One can also opt for products with downstream rates of 8 Mbps and duplex rates of up to 640 kbps.

There are three types of ADSL modems. They are the ethernet ADSL modem, the PCI ADSL modem, and the USB ADSL modem. The ethernet ADSL modem can be fed directly into a PC ethernet port or used to add a modem to certain broadband routers. The PCI ADSL modem fits inside the computer. USB ADSL modems are the most popular form of all ADSL modems, and they are designed for connecting individual computers to ADSL lines.

Now, how does an ADSL modem function? The ADSL modem organizes the stream of aggregate data in blocks. These data are created by multiplexing downstream channels, the duplex channels, and the maintenance channels. While transmitting the data, the ADSL modem attaches an error-correction code to each block. ADSL modems are capable of accommodating ATM transport with variable rates and compensation for ATM overhead, as well as the IP protocols.

ADSL modems can create multiple channels to transfer data. For this, ADSL modems divide the available bandwidth of a telephone line in one of two ways - Frequency Division Multiplexing (FDM) and Echo Cancellation. The FDM assigns one band for upstream data and assigns another band for the downstream data. Further, the downstream path gets sub-divided into one or more high-speed channels by time division multiplexing. Similarly, the upstream path also gets multiplexed into corresponding low-speed channels. Echo Cancellation enables the upstream band to overlap the downstream band. These two bands get separated by means of local echo cancellation. Both Frequency Division Multiplexing (FDM) and Echo Cancellation techniques enable ADSL to split off a 4 kHz region for POTS at the DC end of the band.

However, in spite of the tremendous capabilities of ADSL modems, it is recommended that Internet users using modems should not be awed with the technological capabilities of the modem, and install firewall software for added security.

Not so many years ago, accessing the Internet was a one size fits all?technology. When you wanted to surf the web, send and receive emails, post files to a web site, or just play around on AOL, you accessed it all through your telephone line using a modem and a standard dial-up account. Most of us didnt mind because we realized that the slow speeds we endured were shared by everyone else. The notion of Internet speed envy?had yet to emerge.

Well, those days are long gone! Nowadays, in ever-increasing numbers, people are dumping their old dial-up modems and those slow connections for a much faster Internet experience through DSL, cable, and satellite technologies. In 2002, only 21% of Internet users had broadband connections at home. As of late 2005, that number had risen to 53% [Source: Pew Internet & American Life Project].

For the remaining 47% still using dial-up access, its often because they live where DSL (Digital Subscriber Line) and cable technologies are not available. Yes, there are still lots of rural areas that do not have access to either. Among those who do have access to broadband connections, it is most often older and poorer Americans who choose to keep dial-up access.

Which Internet Access Option is Best for You?

You may be wondering which broadband solution is the best option. While much depends on whats available in your area, for many users it comes down to a personal choice, centered on convenience, speed, and cost. Lets examine the various technologies and the relative advantages of each.

Cable Internet Access

Using your homes existing cable television lines, you can get Internet access included for an additional fee. Expect a large speed increase versus dial-up access. In fact, in many cases cable Internet access is the fastest alternative. Installation is usually completed quickly with just one visit from your cable companys technicians. You will also need a cable modem (supplied by the cable company in virtually every instance, but can be purchased separately as well).

Clearly, the biggest advantage of going with cable access is speed. All things being equal, it is the fastest of the three broadband alternatives, with a top speed of 10 Mbps (Megabits per second). Having said that, cable speeds can be substantially reduced if you share a local network with a lot of other subscribers. People living in densely packed areas, or locations where the cable company has a lot of users on the same network, will only realize a fraction of that top speed. Its a good idea to call your cable provider and ask some pointed questions about these issues before you order. Better yet, ask neighbors who have cable Internet what kind of speed they get.

DSL Internet Access

Digital Subscriber Line access utilizes your existing telephone line in an innovative way to greatly increase your Internet speeds. While cable is usually faster, DSL is substantially speedier than traditional dial-up access and offers a much-improved experience for a modest increase in cost. Installation is quick, usually only requiring a simple change at your homes phone box outside of the house by a phone company technician. You will need a DSL modem, which is included at no extra charge by most providers when you sign an extended service contract.

If you live where DSL is not currently available, be patient. Major providers like Sprint, Verizon, and AT&T are spreading their coverage areas quickly. Even many rural areas can expect to have DSL access in the coming months.

The two big advantages of choosing DSL are cost and speed. You will only need to get the modem and follow some simple instructions to configure it. If you agree to a one-year contract with your phone service provider (most major carriers), the modem will cost you nothing. And the service itself is generally in the $15-$40 per month range, making it a good bargain.

Speed is a bit trickier with DSL. It is slower than cable (top speed is about 6 Mbps), and the major providers offer different packages that limit speeds based on the price you pay per month. To further muddy the waters, DSL is whats known as a distance limited?technology. This means that how far you live from the nearest telephone company switching station determines your actual speed. Those living within a few yards will experience the highest speeds, while those at the other end of your street or block may only get half that speed. The Arizona based group has provided military and commercial clients for four years and are now prepared to link their idea with telecoms and broadband companies in order to bring their idea to the masses.

The working behind the novel wireless provider is that a very small transceiver is attached to the weather balloon that then rises to a total altitude of 100,000ft. According to the company, one balloon can produce a signal that is as strong as 80 mobile phone towers and could therefore enable a lot more people to have broadband internet connections. The company also believe that for the entire United States, 70 balloons would be all that was needed to provide everyone with wireless internet.

The balloons are released by local farmers and other land workers who are paid to deploy them. The balloons are released in areas that have not had wireless internet connections due to the companies who provide them considering it uneconomic, as there are few people in the area.

Around 20% of the United States is out of range for any wireless connection, and it has long been an issue in Britain that many rural areas are unable to receive a wireless signal or are expected to pay over the odds in order to get one, therefore, meaning that they have no option for cheap broadband. Consequently, if this idea was to take off, there would be a large number of people who would benefit.

Space Data are very productive at the moment and release around 10 balloons a day from places in South America that do not receive a wireless signal and is interested in providing its service for the UK. This service is one of many that have seen the potential and the financial benefits that the rural wireless connection market could offer.

Space Data have said that companies that are not offering rural areas a wireless connection are missing out on hundreds of millions of dollars a year. The group have said that they have tapped into a business that is potentially worth $10 billion market.

It would appear that there is a solution to the wireless connection problem, however, not a very long-term one, as the balloons last 24 hours before they burst. The expensive equipment then has to be retrieved; this is done using GPS devices. Environmental groups have said that they fear that the burst balloons could prove a threat to any animals that may eat the latex.

For IT Infrastructure, optical fiber connections (especially SONET, e.g. OC3, OC12, OC48) are becoming critical. It is not uncommon for $50-100M companies to take advantage of SAN technology with offsite replication to a colocation facility. This application than requires higher bandwidth, low latency, and resiliency.

The primary difference between "OC" SONET connectivity and Dedicated lines is that SONET provides a standby "protection" path. It is most useful for TDM connections that can't go down. For example, if you have more than 28 T1 trunks feeding a call center, then using an OC-3 as a transport is a viable method for handing off the trunks from a "reliable" infrastructure.

Furthermore, T1/DS1 and T3/DS3 dedicated circuits are focused more as point-to-point connections. SONET is a self-healing ring topology that prevents single-point issues if brought on premises properly. Thus SONET is a better choice for high capacity, high security, high performance network infrastructures.

Personally, I would say it isn't a specific "type" of application that's most important per se, so much as is the total "volume" of traffic. If, for example, you have a website that generates (or is expected to generate) 80-100Mbps of traffic, you'd probably want an OC3. If you have a sufficient number of users, even email or casual web browsing could eventually add up to the sufficient traffic to necessitate that large of a connection. But generally the volume.....especially for more "complex" activities (e.g. medical imagery, supply chain management networks, high security financial transaction storgae/networks, technical research and data manipulation, complex CAD projects, sophisticated high risk security systems)......is the more crucial part of the equation for deciding on a SONET solution.

Now if you flip the question.....just how important is data transmission, storage and back-up to your organization? How much data is involved, what is a geographically acceptable disaster recovery distance, and so on.....become the decision points. This makes more sense. The rest is simply algebra.

But I guess most companies only get to the algebra bit when it's too late. One could argue that all networked applications are appropriate for OC3, OC12, OC48 etc.....it's just a question of scale and security versus cost.

Consider future expansion needs as well when you make your decision. An OC3 may be your best bet given that as with other optical carrier levels (12, 48, etc), an OC-X (3 in this case) is burstable. In essence, you can start small in regards to your financial commitment of the bandwidth purchased and add capacity as your needs increase.

Given the above discussion....generally you'll most likely find high end network connections are for (examples):
- Server farms
- Video distribution (VoD, IPTV etc)
- Feeding super computers
- Interconnection with other networks
- Very high quality Imaging
- Big Business
- Banks
- Universities
- Hospitals
- Stock Exchanges
- Defense Networks
- Government

In short...the crux of the question is really that it's definitely a bandwidth (volume) issue over an application issue. You're talking huge amounts of bandwidth in use before you really need to move to an OC3+.

Now, for the vast majority of today's infrastructure.... much is still delivered over SONET/SDH infrastructure and Ethernet based services are still in their infancy. Once the far cheaper Ethernet based 100meg/GigE services are commonly made available.....the landscape may change. Yet again.

For those outside looking in....it appears that the "Broadband Nation" in the business world is going a bit crazy over Gigabit Ethernet of all capacities. Careful....there's more to the story than meets the eye (or bandwidth meter.... 'wink').

You can sum it up as such....more often than not users, both inexperienced and power users, seem to be under the impression that bandwidth is related to end to end speed with any data. Where in fact that is only one half of the equation. You must look at the actual data volumes being sent as well....to determine if there are any concerns, bottlenecks or other performance issues.

Now take a step back and really look closely at your usage. For example, you've probably been asked many times to verify if the links were saturated for various servers, ie mail servers hosting hundreds of mailboxes.

One would expect that it be very busy all the time, where actually most baselines will show hardly ever moving past a light 25% or in that case 25Mbits/sec (100Mbps link) and for the record, that is most often combined both directions on a Full Duplex link.

The moral of the story is not needing or even wanting 1000Mbits/sec or even 10000Mbits/sec. It is if the need or want is 101Mbits/sec (in whole numbers here for argument sakes) that warrants the next level throughput and or 1001Mbits/sec to quantify considerations for the big 10000Mbits/sec.

This approach may be more cost effective and a tried and true technology seldom used. However it still offers even more than just speed such as redundancy. Of course these aggregating techniques have evolved also into the gigabit market. But generally they hold value in the super high end of volume throughput requirements..... and both typically not used at the access layer (aka desktop layer).

One had six 1 gigabit slot, intended primarily for interswitch trunking. The other had eighteen 1 gigabit slots, which, at first glance, would seem a bad idea.

The rationale for the 18 port card, however, was that typical Windows servers of the time, with typical processors, could only drive 300 Mbps or so of throughput. There was a net benefit to plugging such a server into a gigabit port, because the individual bits would clock in and out in one nanosecond, rather than 10 nanoseconds on a Fast Ethernet interface. Without going into a lot of queueing theory, this is, statistically, a good thing.

Using parallel 100 Mbps cards still holds down the bit transfer rate, but also adds a nontrivial cost of additional cables and physical ports.

Traffic statistics can be misleading, if you look only at the average transfer rate and conclude the link is little utilized. Especially if you are dealing with delay-sensitive applications such as VoIP, you need to consider the peak, not average utilization, because it is at a peak when you are most likely to encounter delay. For routine transaction processing, average load may be good enough, but not for audio and video, where the effect of delay is cumulative.

Now I'm a big fan of Gigabit Ethernet. But the driver is QoS in a very broad sense, not just traditional traffic analysis but more closely related to how video/multimedia can be supported for globally connected hosts connecting to server clusters.

Examine the existing teletraffic distribution in most enterprises and most do not need big GE, but a few already do and some really dynamic organisations will be shouting yes please.

If we change the perspective, there are genuinely organisations out there who will want to offer those services that could not previously be offered by virtue of the LAN bottleneck or resource exhaustion at the server cluster.

Just remember that it doesn't provide a universal best fit for all enterprises and users.

The pricing for Gigabit Ethernet infrastructure is a major factor in implementing it in any organization. While more and more server vendors are equipping their servers with 10/100/1000 NICs (powered by Intel and Broadcom chipsets), the network side of the house (if not purchased/installed in the last 2-3 years) are still most likely 10/100Mbps.

It makes sense to require all new servers to be 1000Mbps capable, but on the switch side of things: if there isn't a widespread need for 1000Mbps, don't retrofit your entire architecture with it. Do a blade or two on your core switches, and a smaller distribution switch or two for the few aggregation points that do need it.

As the price per port comes down for GigE, cash in on vendor trade-ins to upgrade your equipment. Additionally, watch your bandwidth. There's always been a historical trend where whenever there's additional capacity people get really lax on the management of resources.

640K used to be a memory barrier, forcing people to be efficient with their code, now you have gigs upon gigs where people get sloppy with their code, database indexes, etc. and end up requiring more memory. The same goes for network traffic. But, I am not advocating that you're stingy with your bits, just sensible.

Now, 10GE is a different story, and I can only currently see a need for it in linking campuses and buildings with a significant amount of high-bandwidth users. The price of a single 10GE XENPAK is 2-3 distribution switches, or even a bandwidth shaping device.

There is no way for console gamers to jump into a fray on one of the countless servers available. Of course, there are many things to consider before deciding on a gaming platform. Foremost among these is deciding which games you want to play, how much money you want to spend, and whether or not you need a PC for other purposes.
